My Name is Imdad Baloch, President of Baloch Youth Wing. I have
contacted you to report serious large scale human rights violations. 66
Years ago, on March 27th 1948, Pakistan forcefully occupied
Balochistan. Since then, Pakistan has conducted six major military
offensive operations in the occupied Balochistan region. The province
being rich in natural resources, and strategically located between Iran
and Afghanistan has been of great benefit to the Pakistani
establishment. The Baloch on the other hand have been denied prosperity
or benefit.
On March 17th 2005, under President Musharraf,
the Pakistani Armed Forces resumed the genocidal military campaign in
the region. Gunship Helicopters and F-16 aircraft were deployed against
rural villages in Balochistan. Then President, General Pervez
Musharraf publicly stated: “If they [the Baloch nationalists] do
anything, I will hit them so hard they won’t know what hit them.”
Elderly Nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, the primary target of
Pakistan’s 2005 Military offensive, was killed on August 26, 2006 by
Pakistani Forces. Although the Pakistani forces had successfully
assassinated Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, their ruthless campaign of ethnic
cleansing in the Balochistan region had only just begun.
Since
the death of the Nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, Pakistani
Forces have continuously intensified their Military operations in the
region. The Pakistani State has adopted a scorched earth policy towards
the indigenous population of Balochistan. Rural Baloch villages are
regularly targeted for loot and burn military operations. Gunship
helicopters, APC’s, RPGs, Mortars, and other heavy weaponry are openly
used against civilian targets by the Pakistani Army.
In
Urban centers political activists and protestors are targeted for
abduction, torture and assassination by Pakistani Security Agents.
Doctors, Journalists, Teachers, Students, and even Musicians & Poets
are regularly targets for Pakistan’s death squads. Their homes are
invaded and residents, including the women and children, are terrorized
and abducted without any legal or judicial authorization or even record
of. People are detained and tortured by security forces, who later deny
even abducting them. Eventually the remains of many of the abductees
are discovered in rural areas, riddled with bullets and signs of extreme
torture. Of those taken and murdered by security forces in
Balochistan, not one has ever been brought before any court nor has any
been officially charged with any crime.
More than 18,000
people have been abducted and over 2000 extra-judicially executed since
2005. Despite Pakistan’s ruthless policy of discrimination, oppression,
and intimidation, we continue attempts at peaceful protests, and
through social media, to generate international awareness of the ongoing
tragedy in Balochistan. Worker strikes, election boycotts,
demonstrations, and even foreign protests growing in participation and
frequency.
Recently Voice for Baloch Missing Persons Activist
Mama Qadeer, and his sister Sister Farzana Majeed led the families of
Baloch abduction/execution victims on a 700 kilometer “Long March” from
Quetta to Karachi. Thousands joined Mama Qadeer in protest, even
internationally. Upon reaching Karachi, Mama Qadeer announced during a
seminar, his intent to continue his march until he reaches Islamabad.
Since then, Mama Qadeer and all those who have joined him have already
journeyed another 100 kilometers reaching Thatta, Sindh, today. Upon
reaching Islamabad, Mama Qadeer and the VBMP Marchers will have walked
over 1800 km, despite ongoing threats and violent intimidation tactics
of Pakistani Security Forces and their agents.
Not only for
independence, do the Baloch struggle, but also for a safe, modern, and
moderate society. While other nations in the world such as Canada, and
the UK, offer their provinces the option to become independent through
voter referendum, Pakistan refuses to even consider such an option;
instead resorting to a violent campaign of oppression.
Thank You for your time & attentions.
I hope you can give your concern in the Balochistan matter.
