With the inspirations and allurements of tobacco companies, the farmers
in Gangni under Meherpur district are busy in tobacco cultivation on their croplands,
says a report on the Daily Jia Jai Din on December 29, 2013. The investigative report has found that around
1400 hectares of arable lands have been prepared for tobacco plantation which
is almost twice comparing to the last year. Besides, tobacco companies are providing
special incentives like fertilizers and insecticides for the cultivation among
the
farmers. Field investigations also have found that farmers are busy in
planting tobacco seeds and caring of the plants on their tobacco fields. See the

In another part of the country (in Lama under Bandarban district),
Tobacco Companies are breaching Court Order which bans tobacco cultivation, says
a report published today on Daily Purbodesh, and it is assumed that around 5000
acres of fertile croplands will be used for tobacco cultivation this year. In 2010, journalist Alauddin Shahriar along with
3 others has filed a case to the court of Bandarban Chief Judicial Magistrate
to stop harmful tobacco cultivation in Bandarban. Accordingly, the Court allowed tobacco
cultivation in Bandarban district only in 1000 acres of lands for current year
(2010) and provided verdict to stop tobacco cultivation from next year. But, tobacco
cultivation is not stopped yet and expanding alarmingly. On the other hand,
tobacco companies do not provide actual information regarding total area of
tobacco cultivable land though they receive a letter for providing the actual
figure in every year, says Lama Agricultural Extension Officer.
